India is seat of education, culture, spirituality and times again many a great men have taken birth on Indian soil famous for their contribution towards the society.
Indian educationist Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan is one such name. The ideal teacher, whose birthday is commemorated by celebrating Teachers Day, was indeed an iconic emblem of Indian education.
Apart from this great reformist, some other great names in this regard are quite common to hear. Dr Satyan Bose, Meghnad Saha, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Bose, Sir CV Raman are some brilliant stars of the constellation.
Mathematician Acharya Satyen Bose was instrumental in creating science text books for Indian students in the Indian language. Governed by strongly patriotic feelings this great man became a pillar of modern education system in India.
Meghnad Saha, the great physicist was equally keen to spread the knowledge of modern science and technology to the aspiring Indian minds. Indian Institute for the Cultivation of Science was set up by Dr Mahendra Lal Sarkar to create awareness of modern science and spearhead original research in the disciplines of Physics, Mathematics, Medicine and Engineering by Indians.
Notable Noble laureate Sir CV Raman has spent considerable amount of time in this organization, conducting his research on spectrum. The British Raj in India ended in 1947 however many great educational institutions were set up in the pre independence era too.
Bethune school the citadel of education for the emancipated women, was actually set up by British reformists after the name of Lord John Drinkwater Beeten. Presidency College or Hindu college renowned as the oldest education institution in India was set up initially in the year 1817.
David Hare a Scotch gentleman who had a watch making and repairing business has built this famous college working in collaboration with other eminent people of those times. His Grand watch still adorns the old wall of Hare school as a witness to the golden era of Indian education.
